SOUTHAMPTON, (April 23, 2004) – Mini Transat hopeful Clemency
Williams is thrilled to announce that she has been able to secure
BURGS clothing as title sponsor for 2004 as well as the fact that
she has now been able to start properly training with her 21 ft.
boat out on the water. The sponsorship contract is for three years
and will be subject to review. Formula Spars have done an excellent
job in completing the fitting of a new rig for Clemency’s
Mini and it has meant that she has now put the boat through her
early paces out on the Solent. These great developments mean that
Clemency has been able to leave for France during the weekend of
17th/18th April in order to be registered by the Classe Mini.
Clemency’s first race will be the 300NM Pornichet Select
6.50 on 30th April 2004 followed by her attendance at the Ecover
Academy Seminar in Calais. Clemency will then attempt her 1000NM
qualifying passage for the Mini Transat. Other races will include
the 350NM Mini Cup at the end of May and the 700NM double-handed
Mini Fastnet on 12th June.
“I am thrilled that BURGS Clothing have thrown their support
behind my Mini Transat campaign – it really is much appreciated.
It means that I now have every chance of being able to qualify
for the Mini Transat as well as competing in 2-3 races this Summer.
The boat is handling beautifully and it’s just great to be
able to be out on the water with her at long last – she’s
got great potential,” said Clemency.
When BURGS was approached by Clemency with regards to sponsorship,
they knew immediately that they wanted to be involved. Says Director
of Sales Spencer Martin, “Clemency is one of the most determined
and courageous people that I have ever met. To be associated with
such a person and such an intense and challenging event is what
BURGS is about. We are very excited about this relationship and
the Mini Transat 2005 marks only the beginning of our commitment
to Clemency and her professional endeavours”.
BURGS ideal once was, is today and always will be to produce active
leisurewear for the mildly insane - because BURGS is not just a
clothing range… it’s a state of mind.
The ultimate aim of Clemency’s team is to enable her to
qualify for, and compete in the gruelling 4,500 mile trans-Atlantic
race in her 21ft. sailing boat; by achieving this goal, she would
become one of the few British females to compete in the race. The
event is traditionally dominated by French yachtsmen, but previous
British female competitors have included Ellen MacArthur and Sam
Davies.
Clemency, from Hamble in Hampshire, whose ambitions include competing
in many of the major offshore events, sees the Mini Transat as
a huge challenge, but one that she is desperate to achieve. The
race is an extreme test of tactics and endurance ocean racing competing
against some of the most impressive and professional sailors in
the world.
