“You just can't be as efficient by yourself, it is all about
working together as a team. Picture this - dropping in off the top of a
wave, surfing down the face, sails begin to fold, the call to trim on,
the handles start to fly around, sheets come in, a flick of the wheel and
she powers off down the wave tearing through the water, shredding the water
apart ...16...22...24...26...28.. knots, spray flying, water
gushing across the decks, the hull hums, the sheets groan on the drums
as the sheets are eased and off we go again - how can you do that by yourself
with one set of hands and one mind, it all comes together and the ultimate
speed is created."
“Boating Partners have recognised the determination and drive
exuding from female crews in previous races, and the huge achievements
that were
actually made given the circumstances and experience level both on the
water plus the exposure gained for the sponsor. The female team generally
comes in last minute and is used as a training boat, which ends up with
the team becoming the second or ‘B’ team. This therefore
results in insufficiently funded and trained teams. There is now an enormous
opportunity for brands to be associated with a highly trained crew of
yachtswomen sailing a specially designed boat in the world’s premier
ocean race. The aim would be that any such team would be fully prepared
for the challenges involved and with goals set of taking women’s
sailing and women in sport to another level,” Emma Westmacott.
